BACK AT THE OFFICE, Daniel was gathering information about Timothy Waters.

“The Waters’ family has had it pretty rough,” he said, scanning through documents on his monitor.

“How so, Sir?” Simmons asked vaguely, still engrossed in his own work.

“Jenny Waters, she died at forty-two years old, only a few years after her son went missing. From...” He squinted to read the screen. “...extreme depression. Is that a thing?”

“I believe the term nowadays is broken heart syndrome.”

“Right, political correctness and all that. The father, Allan, worked and retired from an insurance company. He now resides in Florida in a retirement home called Westbrook Retirement Home. He hasn’t left Florida since he moved there almost ten years ago.”

“Sounds like we can them rule out as suspects in Mr. Hamilton’s death.”

“Sounds like it.”

“I did happen to find information on one of the names you collected,” Simmons said, glancing over at Daniel.

“Tell me,” he said.

“Bruce Carver is dead. He died almost a year ago while deep-sea diving. Heart complications. The coroner’s report says that it was stress-induced.”

“What would he have to do to cause that to happen?”

“He was an extreme adrenaline junkie. According to his juvenile records, his pursuits only worsened over time. Nothing to amount to felony charges. His activities look like someone trying to experience death.”

“I wonder what would cause someone to lead a life like that. Does the report state any unusual findings?”

“No. Although, he was only at a depth of five hundred feet when he died. That’s nowhere near deep enough to cause the damage to his heart that was found. Looking at his social media pictures, he was into skydiving, white water rapids, black diamond snowboarding, hang gliding, and bungee jumping. Basically, if you’re able to get a rush of adrenaline from it, he’s done it.”

“So his heart just gave out because of his hobbies?”

“No, more like his heart burst in his chest. I guess too much adrenaline can kill you.”

“He found that out the hard way. Okay,” Daniel said, rubbing the back of his head. “For now, let’s put that aside and deal with those that are living.”

“Have you found anything on the others?” Simmons asked.

“Yes. Matthew Mills lives nearby, one town over. He has a sealed juvenile record. Guess his parents were connected back in the day. There are some reports of disciplinary actions during his high school days. Bullying and fighting. Nothing a teenager doesn’t already do. He works as the general manager for a bank. Nothing else of note. Julien O’Neil lives sixty miles west.”

Daniel paused, looking over his notes before continuing, “He, on the other hand, has a juvenile record thick as most hardened criminals. However, most of those charges appear to have been swept under the rug as well. He didn’t make anything of himself. Worked as a gym teacher at a few prestigious high schools. Got fired for unknown reasons. Nothing in his file. Works at his local high school now. Care to take a guess as to why he was fired?”

“The man got handsy,” Simmons said, his voice etched with disgust.
